Scaredy Grohowski

Born in June of 2003, 1 of a litter of six, in Spanish Harlem, New York. Scaredy and his late brother, Macho-whom we lost to cancer in 2013–, were adopted from the local animal shelter on East 110th in Harlem. They were the last two of their litter to be adopted. When we were introduced to all the various cats and kittens at the ward, Macho immediately came to my hand, meowing lovingly and sweetly, a Cartman at his most devilishly innocent, while Scaredy remained cautiously in the back corner of the cage, observant. Having no experience with pets, I had to rely on gut feelings and these two little black kittens seemed familiar. I loved them in that moment.
I should mention that we didn’t grow up with a lot of pets or animals, ironic, since now my mom and stepdad help tend to rescued horses down in Florida, having a small ranch for the rescues they’ve taken on. digressing...

Of all the cats that were there, these two I felt the most kindred with. It was then explained to us that since they were brothers, it was policy that they be fostered and adopted in a pair. It seemed a no brainer and we agreed and took them home. They took to home life very quickly and easily, and when they played and delighted everyone who has met them and each other. Macho was the ham, but Scaredy always expressed his love with a bit more elegance and cunning. To illustrate, instead of vying to sleep on top of us like Macho often did at bed time and continued to do for many years, Scaredy chose carefully nested spots underneath the bed, directly wherever I slept, a trend that he has now continued on with my wife Julie for as long as we three have been together.

As an artist, the cliche of circumstantial crisis is very real, as it is for all people who live life long enough. The struggles, self made or external, render it far too easy to feel alone in all of it, even if surrounded by love or encouragement. It was in these times that Scaredy and Macho greatly helped through the dark, simply by their nature and ways, the feel of their presence in the house, their sensitivity, and ultimately, by their need for my end of the bargain in loving them and taking care of them to be fulfilled. Having someone or something that relies on you to be present can keep one grounded in the dark moments. The very nature of the bound being that of love and discipline. Scaredy has always been, as he remains to this day, an anchor to this learned lesson and to this world and that is a love will always be cherished.
